SAMDA LogoWe are very pleased to announce that NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has selected SSAI to provide science, technology, and research support services under the Support for Atmospheres, Modeling, and Data Assimilation (SAMDA) contract.  This new contract encompasses the services currently being provided by SSAI’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) support services and Support for Atmospheric Sciences (SAS) contracts in the areas of atmospheric science and data assimilation. SSAI supports the full range of research and development activities in the Earth Science Division-Atmospheres (ESDA) and the GMAO, including the operational activities of the GMAO.

The SAMDA contract will begin on March 1, 2017 and is a hybrid, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract with a core requirement and an indefinite-delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) requirement. The IDIQ portion of the contract has a maximum value of approximately $170 million and the period of performance runs through Feb. 28, 2022.

We at SSAI look forward to continuing our role in support of GSFC scientists conducting a comprehensive atmospheric science, research, and technology development program and those developing, operating, and maintaining comprehensive models and data assimilation systems for Earth’s atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and land surface.

September 7, 2016—SSAI Wins Multiple 'Best Places to Work' awards

Best Places to Work AwardsOn September 7, 2015, SSAI was honored by not only winning the “Best Places to Work in 2016” award in the Hampton Roads Inside Business journal, but also won “Large Companies – First Place” award.  While SSAI has won multiple Best Places to Work awards over the years, this is the first time we have received both of these honors in the same year.  Though their headquarters are in Lanham, Md., SSAI has over 325 employees working in Hampton Roads with the Hampton office location as their base. “Our commitment to customers, employees, and community involvement results in outstanding work and fulfilling careers for SSAI staff,” noted SSAI President Anoop Mehta.

The criteria for the award included company culture and philosophy, employee satisfaction, benefits, community involvement, employee development, and internal equity.  We provided extensive information on these elements, and the third-party survey results confirmed that SSAI employees agreed with our assessments.  We want to thank all the employees who completed the survey; this recognition is a reflection of your taking stock in SSAI and helping us to make it a better place to work every day.

SSAI Wellness Program logo
On July 12-13, third-party registrar Bureau Veritas conducted an ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System surveillance audit at SSAI. The Lead Auditor was extremely impressed with continual improvement initiatives throughout each area of the company. There were no non-conformances cited, and only a few minor suggestions for improvement were identified. This level of implementation of practices to ensure delivery of high-quality customer services shows the commitment and dedication of the SSAI staff in adhering to the high standards we have maintained for many years.

SSAI Wellness Program logo
SSAI has formed an employee-driven Wellness Committee to facilitate, promote, and improve employee health through wellness activities. Members coordinate with local health and fitness programs and serve as “wellness champions.” One of their initiatives is to distribute useful health information on a monthly basis. They are also organizing and implementing an upcoming Fitness Challenge, with progressive goals for physical activity and healthful eating, expected to commence in late June.

June 1, 2016—New Employee Sponsorship Program

On June 1, SSAI kicked off the “New Employee Sponsorship Program,” an initiative that pairs new employees with seasoned staff during their first 90 days. The goals of the New Employee Sponsorship program include providing new employees with a point of contact for general, day-to-day questions and helping new employees to integrate into the company culture by providing access to someone who is familiar with the company. Employees have done a great job over the years in welcoming new members to the SSAI family; this new program formalizes best practices to get every new employee off to the best possible start at SSAI.

May 24, 2016—NASA Features SSAI Scientist's Study

Artist's rendering of ESA's Euclid satelliteBlack holes hit the news with a splash recently in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory’s discovery of gravitational radiation. SSAI’s Dr. Sasha Kashlinsky has been studying far-infrared signatures of primordial radiation from sources at the edge of the known universe. NASA recently noted his insights on its news site: http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/nasa-scientist-suggests-possible-link-between-primordial-black-holes-and-dark-matter.

The gravitational radiation is the result of the gravitational interaction and eventual collision of a pair of massive stars that formed a black hole. Such black holes are also well known to be strong sources of the whole spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, from the far-infrared to x-ray, which is what originally attracted Dr. Kashlinsky’s attention to them.

April 4 & 5, 2016—2016 Anniversary Breakfast Celebrations

Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker visits SSAI's Anniversary Breakfast at Goddard.SSAI celebrated its 39th Anniversary with breakfast events in Maryland and Virginia. Once again, SSAI executives and managers created individual omelets for employees to supplement an extensive buffet. On April 4, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker stopped by GSFC’s Recreation Center to join in the festivities, thanking founders Om and Sara Bahethi for their many contributions to the county’s economic development over the past four decades and wishing them success in the years to come. In Hampton, the celebration continued the following day at the NASA Langley Reid Center, where Anoop Mehta and Mauricio Peredo thanked the group for their hard work and dedication to SSAI and congratulated the team on the recent award of the follow-on STARSS III contract.
