Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support an ongoing Space Network (SN) effort in Greenbelt, MD for the Electrical Systems Engineering Services III (ESES III) contract at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

The ESES III contract is tasked with providing a broad range of engineering and related services to the GSFC Electrical Engineering Directorate as required, for the formulation, design, development, fabrication, integration, testing, verification, and operations of space flight and ground system hardware and software, including development and validation of new technologies in support of NASA’s current and future space flight and ground system projects. 

SSAI has a long history at NASA GSFC as a leading provider of science and engineering services throughout all phases of the program life cycle and across the entire space systems architecture, including space and ground assets.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Systems Engineer will provide telecommunications engineering support to the Space Network, which primarily involves helping the SN with tactical and strategic planning, scoping of architectures, designs and implementation plans for new projects, generating requirements, analysis, and other related documents that are delivered to the SN Project for implementation/consideration, and by directly supporting the government in reconciling products generated by contractors that support the SN.

Work will be performed either onsite at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt or at the White Sands Facility in New Mexico and may also include travel to other ground systems facilities.  This support is to ensure continuity of key in-progress SN efforts and planning, and may include but not be limited to the following:

  • Contribute to the logical and systematic capture and refinement of concepts into total system solutions that are considerate of constraining factors.
  • Support requirement definition/analysis and specifications/design of key ground segment/component interfaces.
  • Contribute to the design and/or analysis of subsystem performance to ensure that subsystems are integrated and work together to form a viable complete system.
  • Develop technical documentation and procedures for installation, maintenance, operation, troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
  • Contribute to operational improvements recommendations to ongoing mission operations.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering from an accredited institution, or equivalent years of practical experience and at least 4 years experience in a technical/leadership role supporting Technology Implementation and Operations Engineering, developing studies, and recommending operational improvements.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience with development of architectures, analysis of alternatives, verification plans, and procedures.
  • Possess technical expertise and leadership abilities to interact with senior NASA management at GSFC and NASA HQ.
  • At least 4 years of experience with Command and Control Systems and anomaly resolution in support of satellite real-time operations.
  • US Citizenship required.  Must be able to pass a Government background investigation.
  • Security Clearance – Active secret preferred
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of GSFC engineering development practices is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of the Space Network Ground Segment Sustaining System (SGSS) is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Space Network Configuration Management and Sustaining Engineering practices is desirable.
