Science Systems and Applications Inc, (SSAI) is searching for a Fiber Optic/Opto-Electronic Subsystem Engineer to support exciting work at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) located in Greenbelt, MD.

The Engineer selected for this position will work with a diverse team of engineers and technicians in the development, evaluation, and implementation of fiber optic and opto-electronic subsystems for use in space and other high reliability applications for a diverse customer base.  With demonstrated experience already gained in this field, this engineer will act as a SSAI Subject Matter Expert for spacecraft and instrument fiber optic and opto-electronic data systems, providing technical leadership from the initial design proposals, subsystem reviews, manufacturing, implementation, and delivery of fiber optic and opto-electronic subsystems. The engineer will also provide technical guidance to flight and non-flight telecommunication and data systems design engineers utilizing fiber optic and opto-electronic components.  With fully functioning manufacturing and testing lab spaces, the engineer will support and advance the evaluation of components and manufacturing processes necessary to implement and integrate high reliability fiber optic and opto-electronic subsystems in spaceflight applications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of work experience in the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and operation of high reliability fiber optic / opto-electronic subsystem used in spaceflight and/or military space applications, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the governing NASA, military, and industry standards for fiber optic / opto-electronic communication subsystems.
  • Demonstrated high reliability spaceflight opto-electronic subsystem development, test, and management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of material properties and specialized requirements for successful high reliability spaceflight application of fiber optic and opto-electronic components
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master of Science in Electrical, Electronic, or Aerospace Engineering; BS in related course of study
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for communicating technical information effectively with technical and non-technical personnel
  • Must be able to efficiently, succinctly, and effectively develop technical and cost proposals
  • Able to prioritize multiple disparate activities, and effectively support multiple projects/tasks with changing priorities
