Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) seeks a motivated and outgoing early to mid-career scientific programmer/analyst to support the ICESat-2 Mission within the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  This position is designed for a mid-career scientist/programmer with experience working with large scientific datasets.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support for the NASA GSFC ICESat-2 mission
  • Assist the ICESat-2 Deputy Project Scientist for the ATLAS Instrument with analyses to assess the on-orbit performance of the ATLAS instrument on the ICESat-2 observatory.
  • Evaluate and fine tune the on-orbit data products, particularly ATL02, the Photon Time of Flight product.
  • Evaluate the on-orbit range bias of ATLAS, and it’s changes through time.
  • Possibly interrogate ATL02, ATL01, pre-launch I&T data and/or ATL03.
Required Qualifications:
  • BS in a STEM related field or comparable work experience
  • 6+ years of experience in scientific programming
  • Proficiency with Python
  • Facility with large data sets, such as the 200+ Tb/year ATL02 data set
Desired Qualifications:
  • BS or higher in a physical science, math, or computer science field
  • Skill at finding correlation, causation, and inconsistencies in a data set
  • Experience in FORTRAN and programming for scientific applications
  • Familiarity with remote sensing
  • Familiarity with the space environment
  • Familiarity with laser altimetry
  • Experience with other tools such as MatLab, IDL, Mathematica
  • Familiarity with Pandas, Jupyter, Git.
