Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a full-time Education and Outreach Specialist to provide leadership support on the Earth to Sky program (ETS).  ETS is a partnership between NASA, the National Park Service (NPS), and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) which enables place-based interpreters and informal environmental educators to access and use NASA climate science resources and other science and outreach products in their work.  ETS provides professional development in climate communication and other Earth science communication, and hosts a supportive community of practice numbering over 800 individuals across the nation. This position will be based at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, with a partial telework option.  The position may be temporarily fully remote, based on pandemic conditions.

The incumbent will support and assist the ETS Lead in:

  • Designing, developing and delivering professional development for interpreters and informal educators
  • Researching relevant science content and providing this to the ETS community via the ETS web presence, listserv and Facebook account
  • Nurturing and sustaining the ETS national community of practice and the community of practice of ETS Regional Leaders
  • Participating, supporting, and contributing to NASA education/outreach community efforts
  • Facilitating collaborative work on science and science communication/education efforts between NASA and land management agencies
  • Devising and implementing practices to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and access for the ETS community
Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in science, science education/communication or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in developing and providing interpretive/environmental education products and/or programs for varied audiences
  • Experience in developing, coordinating and implementing education and public outreach products and programs about Earth and/or Space science
  • Experience in program/project management
  • Knowledge and experience with the NPS and/or National Association for Interpretation professional interpretation methodology
  • Experience in designing, developing, and providing successful professional development for informal educators (interpreters and/or environmental educators) particularly in science communication/interpretation
  • Ability to work independently from project leadership
  • Strong skills in interpersonal communication
  • Strong skills in oral and written communication
  • Ability to successfully pass a background investigation and obtain a NASA badge
Desired Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in science, education, or a related discipline; 5 years experience
  • Experience in collaborating with NASA outreach staff, or NPS or USFWS professional development staff, to create/lead training for interpreters and/or environmental educators
  • Experience with the Earth to Sky partnership training methodology
  • Experience in collaborative efforts, contributing to a team to accomplish science communication/interpretation/education or training
  • Experience in overseeing complex projects, or coordinating a team to accomplish project goals
  • Knowledge of Earth/Earth Systems Science
  • Knowledge of basic remote sensing
