Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is looking for a full-time Mechanical Engineer on the Electrical Systems Engineering Services III (ESES III) contract at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) supporting the Detector Systems Branch. The engineer will primarily provide mechanical design and fabrication support for cryogenic and vacuum testing of detectors currently under development for future space flight science instruments.

The ESES III contract includes the provision of electrical/electronic engineering support services and related work to the Engineering and Technology Directorate.  The work includes the study, design, development, fabrication, integration, testing, verification and operations of spaceflight, airborne and ground system hardware and software, including development and validation of new technologies to enable future space and science missions. The Mechanical Engineer will provide on-site support to NASA Detector Systems Branch.

Specific duties for this position may include the following:

• Developing mechanical design using tools such as SolidWorks and Creo
• Creating 3D concept models and perform mechanical and thermal analysis modeling for both board and system-level components
• Performing mechanical design functions including drafting, assembly drawings, interface definitions and configuration management
• Designing mechanical test fixtures to mount inside a cryostat for testing detectors at cryogenic temperatures, and low pressure/vacuum
• Generating drawings, STEP/IGES files for fabrication and working with machine shop personnel
• Performing parts inspection and fit checks
• Working in a clean room environment to assist with mechanical assemblies and test setups
• Maintaining a high attention to detail, including the ability to precisely follow detailed interface control documents
• Demonstrating excellent communication skills, including providing clear verbal and written communication with project team members, during informal and formal group meetings and via email
• Displaying initiative and working independently on project tasks, while also working effectively with multiple project teams

• BS Mechanical Engineering with 8-10 years experience in mechanical design and/or manufacturing engineering that includes electronics assemblies
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes including standard CNC machining, and materials such as aluminum, copper, titanium, delrin etc.
• Must be proficient with mechanical design tools (SolidWorks, Creo)
• Able to work in a team environment
• Must be US citizen or permanent resident

• MS in Mechanical Engineering
• Prior NASA or industry experience
