Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is seeking a 2021 Summer Intern to help support the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) Team in evaluating atmospheric trace gas measurements from NASA remote sensing satellite instruments. This work is under the Support for Atmospheres, Modeling, and Data Assimilation (SAMDA) contract. This contract provides scientific, technology and research support for NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD) in the areas of Atmospheric Science and Data Assimilation.

For several decades NASA has collected measurements of atmospheric composition from instruments flown on a variety of spacecraft. Measurements of atmospheric trace gases are important for understanding the fundamental physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere, and their effects on air quality, stratospheric ozone, and Earth’s climate. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) has played an important role in these efforts since it was launched on NASA’s Aura satellite in 2004.  More information about OMI and Aura is available at https://aura.gsfc.nasa.gov.  The OMI team recently instituted wide-reaching changes to the instrument calibration and algorithms used to derive trace gas measurements from OMI.

As an intern, you will work with the OMI team to evaluate the impact of these changes on the nitrogen dioxide and ozone datasets produced from OMI. You will have a dedicated mentor who will provide proper guidance to achieve a set of science objectives.

You will learn and be exposed to:

  • Analysis methods for large scientific datasets collected by NASA satellite missions.
  • Fundamental principles of trace gas remote sensing.
  • Participation in regular group meetings, including presentation of your results.

As an SSAI intern, you will take part in the NASA Summer 2021 GSFC Orientation and other events and activities offered by the NASA internship program throughout the summer.

This is a 100% virtual internship.
