Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is seeking a 2021 Summer Intern to help support the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Team in evaluating data collected by satellite remote sensing instruments. This work is under the Support for Atmospheres, Modeling, and Data Assimilation (SAMDA) contract. This contract provides scientific, technology and research support for NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD) in the areas of Atmospheric Science and Data Assimilation at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

 NASA for several decades has used satellite instruments to derive information about how the Earth's systems function on a global scale, and OMPS is a group of such instruments currently in orbit that NASA is using to measure the composition of the atmosphere. Careful analysis of ultraviolet and visible sunlight scattered back into space and measured by OMPS gives information about things such as the distribution of ozone in the atmosphere and the movement of airborne particles produced by fires, volcanoes, and dust storms.  As an intern, you will analyze the OMPS datasets in collaboration with the team leadership and a mentor who will provide guidance. The work will be computational so applicants should have a good background and strong interest in computer or physical science.

You will learn and be exposed to:

  • Analysis of scientific datasets collected by NASA satellite missions.
  • Fundamental concepts of remote sensing.
  • Participation in regular group meetings, including presentation of your results.

As an SSAI intern, you will take part in the NASA Summer 2021 GSFC Orientation and other events and activities offered by the NASA internship program throughout the summer.

This is a 100% virtual internship.

Required Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in High School or B.S. program with a major focus on Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physical Science.
  • Interest in atmospheric sciences and remote sensing.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Python, IDL, Matlab, or a similar language.
Desired Qualifications:

  •  Basic knowledge of data analysis and data handling.
