Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is searching for a Web Developer/Science Programmer to work approximately 32 hours per week (qualifies for Full Time benefits) supporting the Global Fire Emissions Database (GFED) at Goddard Space Flight Center.

The GFED is a satellite-based estimate of fire emissions used for a range of Earth system science and applications. Access to GFED data is through the main GFED website,  This website serves to host data products/links, an Analysis Tool to enable interactive online analysis with GFED datasets and underlying burned area and active fire datasets, and new products that focus on the characteristics of individual fire events, the Global Fire Atlas and the Amazon Dashboard. Supporting GFED and the related data product and analysis capabilities on involves:

  • Maintenance and development of the website,
  •  Maintenance and enhancement of existing capabilities for data analysis, including the Analysis Tool on,
  •  Maintaining and revising source code for the Amazon Dashboard and other instances of global fire event tracking, based on the approaches developed for the Global Fire Atlas. This includes development of existing and new python code for the analysis of VIIRS active fire data, in conjunction with other NASA and contributed data layers in standard GIS and remote sensing formats.
  •  Creation of new web capabilities that extend the current tools on to support stakeholder needs for fire data across the Amazon region.
  •  Documentation of analysis and web source code for the Amazon dashboard, and interfacing with the SERVIR-Amazonia hub IT team for eventual transition of the Dashboard to the Hub IT environment.
  •  Engagement on related tasks where GFED data are combined with NASA data products and model output, including the NASA Disaster’s portal instance of GFED near-real time emissions and further development of model-data efforts that involve the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office GEOS model.


Required Qualifications:
  • BS and 6 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This work requires expertise in web and python programming for data analysis.
  • Some disciplinary expertise is preferred. 
  •  Careful attention to detail, given the high-priority nature of NASA’s fire emissions and fire detection products,
  •  Clear written and oral communication skills to interface with scientists, stakeholders, and NASA Program Scientists, and the media,

Desired Qualifications:
  • Degree in computer science or similar, with Web development expertise and science background /interests. 
  • Tools/Programming Languages include but not limited to Python, Github
  • Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is desirable, but not required.
