Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a ScientificVisualization Specialist to support the Scientific VisualizationStudio (SVS) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The personin this role will create cinematic scientific visualizations to supportNASA science and missions.  A demo reel will be required should you be selected for an interview.

Primary Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Creating cinematic scientific visualizations (for examples see: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov)

  • Working with scientists to translate their observations, results, and datasets into compelling visuals.

  • Collaborating with communication specialists to determine ways to communicate the latest NASA science.

  • Processing a variety of scientific datasets in a variety of formats to enable import into 3D animation and visualization software.

  • Participating in professional development opportunities to stay abreast of the latest trends in the scientific visualization field. 

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field such as computer sciences, physical sciences, technology, engineering, math, or related field, and 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Strong programming ability

  • Experience using 3D Modelling and animation software such as Houdini and Maya

  • Experience working with large scientific datasets and a variety of data formats (for example netCDF, HDF, fits, etc.). 

  • Experience producing high-quality scientific visualizations. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.

  • Solid communication skills, both oral and written. 

  • Some coursework in physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, etc.) 

  • Ability to meet NASA IT security requirements and to obtain a NASA badge to work onsite at GSFC.

  • A positive attitude, the ability to work well as part of a team, and the willingness to learn.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with/using: 

    o   Renderman 

    o   Maya 

    o   Houdini (the SVS is moving towards greater use of Houdini in the studio; a candidate who can assist in this transition is desired) 

    o   Open Shading Language (OSL) 

  • Understanding of best practices in science communication

  • Python programming experience
