Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a subject matter expert (SME) level Electrical Integration and Test Engineer for the ESES III contract in support of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).  This is a part-time position based in Greenbelt, MD.

The position is temporarily remote due to COVID-19, though some onsite work may be authorized at the GSFC campus.

The project most likely to be supported includes the On-Orbit Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing (OSAM-1) program, or the Plankton, Aerosols, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission.  OSAM-1 is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite.  PACE is all about gathering data that will help us better understand how the ocean and atmosphere exchange carbon dioxide.  In addition, it will reveal how aerosols might fuel phytoplankton growth in the oceans.

The SME will participate in the most challenging aspects of integration and test planning and implementation for both flight and ground systems, including spacecraft subsystems and systems, and testbed systems.  The incumbent will function as a member of a project I&T team, and may perform a technical management role.

Job duties include:

  • Provide subject matter expertise and related technical assistance to the project team, I&T team, and/or higher level technical management personnel.
  • Participate in completion, maintenance, and/or review of I&T planning documentation, including integration plans, test plans, test flows, schedules, and budgets; guide, direct, and/or advise I&T team members through implementation of I&T activities.
  • Develop and provide recommendations for I&T related challenges or issues.
  • Assist with coordination of I&T activities and facility usage; and communicate status and issues/concerns with team, project, and organizational management.
  • Participate in coordination with subsystem leads and responsible engineers to identify/update hardware requirements on the various subsystems and make recommendations for testing plans and plan updates at the system level.
  • Coordinate risk mitigation plans with systems engineers and project management, as related to system level test plans, validation approaches, and real time issues and challenges.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or closely related field, with 20+ years of related experience.
  • Experience with hardware integration and test, system verification and validation, and systems engineering, preferably at NASA or in aerospace.
  • Experience in system level test plan development for design verification and system validation, including interface checkout, functional testing, and environmental testing.
  • Thoroughly familiar with aerospace flight system testing methods, including related standards such as the General Environmental Verification Specification (GEVS).
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems using various types of test equipment.
  • Experience directing members of medium to large engineering teams in pursuit of flight system design and/or testing.
  • Experienced at authoring and maintaining project documentation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working on NASA GSFC in-house spacecraft or in-house payload/instrument assembly, integration and test programs.
  • Familiarity with NASA GSFC I&T workflows and experience with Work Order Authorization (WOAs).
  • Familiarity with electrical interconnect systems for spacecraft, and standard mate/demate practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop requirements, design documents, and test plans that comply to higher-level specifications.
  • Knowledge of various engineering disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, and systems. The ability to communicate with technical personnel from multiple skill areas and functions to evaluate technical information and issues impacting design, production, and support of products, services, or other deliverables.
  • Knowledge of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) considerations with respect to electrical design.
  • Familiarity with MIL standards and requirements, NASA standards and requirements, AS9100 or ISO 9001.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Well organized and possess excellent communication skills.
  • Able to plan and prioritize work effort and quickly respond to issues and questions.
