Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Senior Research Scientist with experience in space sensors and instrument calibration to work on our projects at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This position will support mission definition phase, pre-launch testing and on-orbit calibration and characterization of two optical Earth imaging sensors onboard the upcoming NASA Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission, 1) a Hyperspectral imager in the visible and shortwave infrared and 2) a multispectral imager in the thermal IR. SBG project provides scientific, engineering and software support for the design, development and testing of the remote sensing instrument, sensor system engineering, instruments calibration and on-orbit performance analysis to NASA.

The focus of this position is on the instrument calibration methodologies and associated computing tools, as well as the processing and reduction of large data sets to meaningful performance metrics useful in maintaining the calibration of the sensors. The candidate will not only benefit from our large SBG team of engineers and scientists, but also will benefit from being involved in the current initial phase of the mission development. This early support provides opportunity to contributing and learning about mission major reviews, system engineering and interaction with multiple private vendors. Strong scientific programming and data analysis skills are needed for this position, as well as working knowledge of the underlying physical processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • MSc. or higher degree in physics, engineering or comparable field of study and at least 4 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience with data analysis using software packages such as IDL, Matlab or Python
  • Strong background in data analytics, and able to identify and perform research tasks
  • Capable of working both independently and within a dynamic science team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and oral presentations made at major science conferences
  • US citizenship or Permanent Residence status is required for this position
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working with space sensors testing, calibration and characterization, either pre-launch or post-launch.
