Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Senior Research Scientist with experience in space sensors calibration to support projects on the Hydrosphere, Biospheric and Geophysics (HBG) contract at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. 

This position will support space-based instruments calibration and characterization on-board multiple NASA science missions such as MODIS, VIIRS and ABI instruments. Our team of experts provides scientific, engineering, and software support for the design, development and on-orbit calibration activities.

The work will involve space remote sensing calibration and performance analyses and sensor calibration throughout the instrument's life-cycle. The incumbent will work with instrument scientists to monitor and independently assess instrument geolocation and spatial performance, develop and utilize software for processing the data from instrument systems and related ancillary data sources to generate the first level data products and performance assessments. The work also involves tools development to improve current algorithms, and to model sensor characteristics. Strong scientific programming and data analysis skills are needed for this position, as well as working knowledge of the underlying physical processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • MSc. or higher in Remote Sensing, environmental sciences, physics, or comparable field of study and at least 4 years of related experience
  • Strong software programming/coding skills on C/C++, Python, IDL, etc.
  • Strong background in data analytics, and able to identify and perform research tasks
  • Capable of working both independently and within a dynamic science team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and oral presentations made at major science conferences
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working with space sensors testing, calibration and characterization
  • Experience with operational sensor data processing software and interaction between engineering and science teams
