Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking an individual with experience in remote sensing, scientific programming, and data analysis to support the NASA CERES mission that provides climate quality fluxes to the scientific community. The individual will be working with the CERES Imager and Geostationary calibration group (CERES IGCG) to operationally monitor the stability and intercalibrate geostationary (GEO), MODIS and VIIRS sensor radiances to a common reference. The individual will be working on algorithm development and improvement of post-launch or vicarious calibration methods. The individual will be developing, characterizing, and improving the deep convective cloud, desert, and polar ice invariant target algorithms designed for both GEO and polar orbiting sensors. Similarly, the individual will be investigating new techniques for advancing the sensor pair ray-matching algorithms, sensor pair spectral band adjustment factors, and narrowband to broadband relationships. The individual will also document important research findings through presentations at conferences and peer-reviewed publications. The CERES IGCG will be working closely with the CERES CLARREO Pathfinder team to radiometrically scale the GEO, MODIS and VIIRS imagers to an SI traceable calibration reference. The CERES IGCG is involved in many calibration efforts, such as the GSICS, and ISCCP-NG, and with the NASA VIIRS and MODIS calibration teams, in order to enhance calibration algorithms as well as to collaborate and share best practices with other calibration teams.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can easily work with a diverse team, is intellectually curious, and can think creatively and critically across the inter-calibration subsystem. This individual will play a key role in supporting the CERES science team in providing consistent fluxes and cloud retrievals across multiple sensors in the CERES record. Required Qualifications:
  • MS degree in Atmospheric Science, Physical Science, or related field with experience in Earth passive remote sensing and three (3) or more years of experience in scientific data analysis, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical data analysis
  • Proficiency in scientific programming required
  • Solid communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to meet NASA's background investigation requirements for IT and physical access to NASA facilities
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience using Fortran, C, IDL, Python, MATLAB
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, science environment
  • Experience with Earth remote sensing observations, especially radiometric inter-comparisons of satellite sensors
