Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is looking for an Atmospheric Scientist to join a team supporting the Air Force weather community and the Technology Application Development and Sustainment (TADS) contract in the Omaha, NE area. The successful candidate will serve as subject matter expert in meteorology and atmospheric science, and will be responsible for applying knowledge of atmospheric processes in order to analyze and predict weather elements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work as a member of an integrated team with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) scientists, data scientists, meteorologists, and software engineers to develop new methods for analyzing and forecasting operational weather, to include the global cloud field.
  • Apply weather knowledge to help with algorithm development and refinement of new analysis and forecasting tools and techniques.
  • Verify and validate new techniques.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on operational weather forecasting and analysis for Air Force weather operations.
  • Apply weather analysis and forecasting knowledge to help develop, verify, and refine numerical weather prediction techniques for Air Force weather operations.
  • Verify output from numerical weather prediction tools against observational data, including surface observations, sounding data, and satellite observations.
  • Analyze satellite data from various sources to understand global weather patterns, particularly the global cloud field.
  • Analyze meteorological data to ensure accuracy and to identify and develop new algorithms for potential integration into numerical modeling systems.
  • Perform applied research on exploitation of numerical model output and observational data to improve NWP tools.
  • Perform applied research to apply and adapt published scientific research to Air Force applications.
  • Monitor peer-reviewed journal articles to identify techniques for potential application to Air Force Weather forecasting problems.
  • Write reports on results of applied research activities.
  • Develop reports and forecasts from the analysis of weather and climate data to support numerical model development.
  • Use computer models and analyze atmospheric data.
  • Create weather maps and graphics.
  • Use weather balloons, radar systems, satellites, and sensors to monitor the weather and collect data.
  • Analyze historical weather and climate information such as cloud data, precipitation, and temperature records, to identify trends and patterns that may be exploited for NWP applications.
  • Understand and predict global and regional weather patterns.
  • Provide analysis of new tools and techniques for applicability to the operational forecasting mission.

Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science equivalent or equivalent knowledge.
  • Understanding of operational NWP models such as WRF, GFS, and the UK Meteorology Office Unified Model.
  • Experience with Python and FORTRAN.
  • Experience with satellite meteorology and cloud forecasting.
  • Experience validating/verifying numerical weather prediction models and/or algorithms.
