Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton VA has an exciting opportunity for an early career Scientific Programmer/Analyst. 

The successful candidate will work with scientists and researchers on cutting-edge studies of Earth and planetary atmospheres, ocean phytoplankton, as well as sea ice, and support lidar data acquisition and analysis.  This position requires 1-3 years of experience in programming/scripting languages along with coursework in physics, atmospheric and marine sciences.  Primary duties include the advancement and maintenance of software for both data analysis and basic research studies, the reduction, analysis and visualization of satellite, airborne, and ground-based atmospheric data, and communication of results in writing and verbally, within team meetings to conference presentations.  The qualified candidate should also possess strong problem-solving skills, leading to innovative solutions.  This is an excellent opportunity for an energetic, self-starter with strong programming and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic and collaborative environment.     

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Computer Science, or in a related Scientific/Technical field such as Physics, Math, Atmospheric, marine or Cryosphere Sciences, and 1-3 years of demonstrated programming experience in the development and testing of science algorithms, analysis software, and/or data management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Rigorous academic coursework or work experience, involving Earth Observation and Remote Sensing
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following programming/scripting languages:  MATLAB, Python, or IDL /ENVI. Ability to program in Fortran is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and diagnosing problems, and providing innovative solutions
  • Ability to work independently as well as within an integrated team of scientists and engineers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as the selected applicant may be required to contribute to various peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Pandas, Jupyter, Git. 
  • Experience working with large datasets or familiarity with science data formats.
  • Familiarity with ocean color products, such as MODIS ocean color product, Bio-Argo float ocean profiles.
  • Exposure to multiple Earth observation satellites like CALIPSO, ICESat-2, MODIS/VIIRS/Landsat/NOAA AVHRR/ESA Sentinel etc.
  • Knowledge of oceanography, ocean color, apparent optical properties, and/or satellite remote sensing is not required, but would be a plus.
