Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) has an exciting opportunity at the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) Distributive Active Archive Center (DAAC) at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA for a Science Systems Analyst who has experience in atmospheric sciences. Ideally, this candidate has a strong atmospheric sciences or related background to play an essential role in our mission by working with our Data Advanced Concept and Transformation team. The candidate will support development to maintain and produce software in Virtual, Amazon AWS Cloud and/or Kubernetes/OpenShift environments, work with senior developers and the atmospheric science community to develop software that improves discovery and access of scientific data. The candidate will assist in preparing project plans, reports, and documentation for software development efforts, as well as design presentations. Assessments will include generating reports and communicating metadata issues with appropriate data providers. The candidate will work with the science teams providing data to the ASDC as well as the users of those data to improve metadata for discovery and accessibility to ASDC data holdings.
Required Qualifications:
  • MS in atmospheric science, physics, earth sciences, or a related discipline, with at least 5 years of applicable work and/or research experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Experience with analysis of earth science data
  • Strong programming skills in a Unix/Linux environment
  • Understands the implementation of technology related to exploiting earth science data
  • Be able to develop code in Python
  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle
  • Git code management practices
  • Familiarity with Agile Methodologies
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be US Citizen
Desired Qualifications:
  • Specializing in Earth Science data analysis and informatics
  • General science knowledge/familiarity with NASA Earth Science data and how they relate to each other and the science community.
  • Addressing science community needs for accessing and using data, including geospatial representations, science discipline-based ontology and faceted based searching, and advanced data analysis tools.  
  • Facilitate the usage of multi-mission data with ASDC partners and supported science teams
  • Communicate with ASDC science customers to ensure issues are identified and the ASDC maintains alignment with science community needs
  • Research experience includes multi-mission data analysis (e.g., inter-comparisons, data quality, data fusion) and sensitivity analysis for global and regional assessments of aerosol, clouds and other atmospheric parameters
  • SQL and relational database experience
