Job Description:
Science Systems And Applications Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Software Engineer to support the Climate Science Branch of NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The candidate will support software development for Fast Longwave And Shortwave Flux (FLASHFlux)  team, the near- real time processing component of the Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Project. He/She will engineer the next edition of the FLASHFlux codebase, integrate the codebase into an updated production system and will be responsible for general code maintenance and documentation. The candidate will ensure usage of state-of-the-art software development approaches to evolve  the current operational systems and tools. This is an opportunity to take part in the stewardship of an in-demand product suite used widely by public and private interests.
Required Qualifications:
  • MS degree in Computer Science or BS Degree with at least 3 years of experience
  • Experience programming in scripting languages, such as Perl or Python
  • Experience programming in Python or C++ for object-oriented software development
  • Experience developing software in a Unix/Linux environment
  • Experience using batch data processing in Cloud or Cluster computing environments 
  • Experience using version control systems (preferably Git but not limited to SVN, Mercurial)
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, science environment
  • Knowledge of proper code documentation practices
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with OPeNDAP and tiered distributed data systems
  • Experience architecting/utilizing databases (MySQL, SQLite, or PostgreSQL)
  • Experience programming in FORTRAN
  • Experience using scientific datasets, eg. HDF5 and NetCDF4
  • Experience with unit-testing
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience working with legacy code
