Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is seeking a 2021 Summer Intern to help support NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) under the Support for Atmospheres, Modeling, and Data Assimilation (SAMDA) contract. This contract provides scientific, technology and research support for NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD) in the areas of Atmospheric Science and Data Assimilation.

The GMAO is engaged in modeling and research efforts to better analyze, predict, and understand the earth system including land, ocean, and atmospheric processes. The GMAO has a rich data holding of global high-resolution data with far reaching applications for research and decision support as well as public education. The Framework for Live User-Invoked Data (FLUID) system was built to make data and visualizations more accessible using a series of web-based tools. FLUID is used by NASA scientists and during real-time field campaigns and mission support. More information about the GMAO is available at https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/ and about FLUID at https://fluid.nccs.nasa.gov/about/.

The goal of this internship is to extend and enhance the suite of visualizations currently available under FLUID. As an intern, you will work closely with members of the Data Services team at GMAO to establish new web instances for multiple scientific disciplines within the organization. You will have a dedicated mentor who will provide proper guidance to achieve a set of science objectives. This will encompass many fascinating earth-science topics including weather, aerosol transport, trace gas emissions, carbon modeling, seasonal forecasting, global reanalysis, and support for special observing campaigns. You will work to develop high-quality visualizations and tools to enhance the accessibility and application of GMAO products. You will be helping to build the GMAO Observatory for Earth Science Applications!

Intern will learn and be exposed to:

  • Application of atmospheric data to decision support and research
  • Visualization using configured objects
  • Colormap design and tuning for earth science data
  • Python visualization packages
  • Front-end Web Development

As an SSAI intern, you will take part in the NASA Summer 2021 GSFC Orientation and other events and activities offered by the NASA internship program throughout the summer.

This is a 100% virtual internship.
