Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is searching for Laser Engineer to develop diode pumped solid state laser technologies for future space flight missions at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The Laser Engineer will be involved in all aspects of the laser development in optical, thermal, mechanical, electrical and electronics disciplines.  Working as part of a multi-discipline development team will have knowledge and experience with various laser components, driver electronics and test and calibration equipment.  Will have the ability to work independently in a specialized laboratory environment testing and evaluating laser systems and laser components.  Strong communication, documentation and interpersonal skills and will be required to participate in project related reviews, publications and technical interchange meetings.  Background in lasers, optical design, electrical design, mechanical design, test planning and test execution. Will have familiarity with regulatory, laser and general laboratory safety protocols.  Hands-on experience is a must.

Specific duties for this position may include the following:

  • Diode pumped solid state laser transmitter design and development
  • Supporting laser development for NASA projects by advancing the Technology Readiness Level from 3 (breadboard level) to 6 (space qualified design)
  • Laser and electro-optic component characterization, assembly and testing
  • Knowledge of environmental testing and space qualification protocols for space flight optical or laser instruments is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with any or all the following software programs: ZEMAX, TracePro, LASCAD, LabVIEW, Mathcad, MATLAB, SOLIDWORKS
  • Demonstrating excellent communication skills, including providing clear verbal and written communication and documentation of fabrication process results
  • Providing status reports to project team members, during informal and formal group meetings and via email
  • Managing time effectively to meet project deadlines
Required Qualifications:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field with 5+ years of experience as an Instrument Engineer supporting development of Solid State Laser Transmitter, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years experience in industry or research laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of spaceflight hardware requirements
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
