Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a motivated and talented web developer to work in the NASA Carbon Cycle & Ecosystems Office (CCE Office) to support meaningful projects in Earth and environmental science research, engineering, and applications for societal benefit. This position is with a team responsible for maintaining websites and developing new web applications using modern, secure, and responsive technologies.  The websites are primarily dynamic content generated from a MySQL/MariaDB relational databases, and a limited amount of static HTML.  Web applications are written in Perl and Node.js, with some client-side jQuery.  The developer will join the CCEO team to modernize legacy Perl applications to Node.js, as well as apply new technologies and approaches to providing responsive and efficient solutions.  Web developer responsibilities also include doing 3rd party application/library installs and software upgrades on Linux, working with system administrators, responding to requested website changes and new features, troubleshooting bugs, providing user support and monitoring processes.  

In addition to web tools, the CCEO team creates and uses a custom automated scripts that perform data QA, data population/syncing, and email notifications. The CCEO team is also responsible for creating and supporting science team meeting websites, that feature registration, abstract submission, online interactive agendas, and virtual, hybrid, and in-person presentations.

The position is for onsite work at Goddard Space Flight Center but up to 100% telework can be arranged.

Required Qualifications:
  • BS in Computer Science or Software Engineering or comparable experience
  • Experience writing functional JavaScript from scratch
  • Demonstrated web development experience
  • Ability to write maintainable, scalable, and reusable code
  • Demonstrated knowledge of secure coding practices
  • Experience in a server-side scripting language, such as Perl, Python, PHP or Ruby
  • Experience working with SQL
  • Comfortable navigating a Linux environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience programming in Node with Express.js
  • Experience building responsive web designs
  • Experience using version control systems, such a Git
  • Experience in fundamental web design technologies (HTML, CSS)
  • Experience with creating secure website account sign-in applications
